The Cope – Building a Digital Growth Strategy for a Multi-Site Retail Cooperative

The Cope, a long-established cooperative society in Donegal, operates across four locations and 12 diverse retail businesses, from food stores and fashion to hardware, furniture, and agricultural supplies. Despite its strong local presence, The Cope faced challenges in developing a cohesive digital strategy that could drive revenue, enhance brand visibility, and engage a broader audience across multiple sectors.

Within these four locations, there are 12 individual retail businesses, including food stores located in Annagry, Falcarragh, and Kincasslagh. Operating from the town of Dungloe, The Cope offers a range of services, including: Hardware & Homeware, Menswear, Sports, Ladieswear, Furniture & Flooring, An Club Beag Play Area, IT Sales & Services, Home Improvement / Builders’ Providers, and Agricultural Supplies.

Our Approach

Emarkable partnered with The Cope to design and implement a comprehensive digital transformation plan. This began with complete audits of their website, SEO, PPC, social media, content, and training needs. Based on these insights, we developed a 12-month strategy tailored to their unique mix of retail operations, focusing on:

  • Optimising the website for speed, usability, and customer experience.
  • Building a roadmap for SEO, PPC, social media, and content marketing.
  • Strengthening internal capabilities through digital training and process improvement.

Execution

We introduced new website features and UX improvements to enhance online shopping experiences. Strategic PPC campaigns were launched to drive targeted traffic, complemented by SEO initiatives aimed at improving search visibility and attracting organic customers. Social media programmes were restructured to create engaging, customer-focused content that built stronger community connections.

Results

The outcomes of this strategy were clear:

  • Improved customer relationships through more engaging social interactions.
  • Stronger brand recognition across local and online audiences.
  • Increased traffic and conversions from targeted PPC campaigns.
  • Enhanced digital capabilities within The Cope’s internal team through structured training.

The Outcome

Thanks to Online Retail Scheme funding and a structured digital roadmap, The Cope successfully evolved into a more digitally agile retailer. By unifying its diverse businesses under a more substantial online presence, the cooperative has expanded its reach, improved engagement with its community, and built a foundation for sustainable digital growth.
