Persistent summary of eCommerce Checkout Information
As discussed in the eCommerce Checkout Process, customers may want to be reminded and reassured about the information they have entered during the checkout process so far. The more the checkout hides the information entered by the customer the more they are likely to click back and forth to check it.
The accordion checkout design one way of achieving this. An alternative approach is to have a panel containing a summary of basket contents and checkout information entered so far that is visible throughout the checkout process.
At the start of the checkout, this summary panel will simply show basket contents. Our recommendation here is that, where possible, thumbnail images, titles, variant choices and quantities of products are shown, along with total price (inclusive of discounts, taxes, delivery etc.). As checkout progresses, the summary panel will expand to show summaries of email, billing and delivery addresses, payment details and delivery / gift wrap options.
This summary panel is usually positioned on the right-hand side of the page. For sites with a persistent mini-basket in the right hand corner of the header prior to checkout, this location is more important to give consistency and comply with customer expectations.
Customers must be able to navigate to previous steps in the checkout process in order to edit each step if required, without leaving the checkout process or losing information.
