The eCommerce Checkout Process

Navigation through out the eCommerce checkout is always one directional – towards the checkout.

The only exception to this is when a customer wants to check the information they entered a step or two before. This can prove to be the downfall of any checkout process due to bad design or bad testing. Customers may want to retrace there steps because they want to:

  • Change the product they are buying
  • Use a different email address
  • Use a different delivery address
  • Use a different payment method
  • Check the details previously entered

The obvious solution to this is to minimise the need to click back and forth. The way to solve this is to have a persistent summary of checkout information. Having this clear visibility of information with an edit button allows the customer to edit their information if needs be. The customer should know where they are in the checkout process and what remains to be done before purchase is complete.
